The Adly Supersonic 125cc

Within a month of buying the little Spirit I realized that this scootering lark was unlikely to be a passing fad.

I was using the bike almost daily and saving a fortune on bus fares, on top of that I was getting home over half an hour earlier each night.

However I was beginning to realize that fast A class roads are better suited to something with a little more gusto.  After some thought the Spirit went up for sale on E-bay and I booked myself in for a CBT.

I used the Spirit for the CBT course which caused no end of amusement for my instructors, one of them was heard to comment that the bike had "so much plastic I thought it was an extension of the helmet".  While my fellow big bike trainees roared away into the distance, I pottered along happily at 30mph.

Actually the CBT was great fun and taught me a lot, especially with regard to riding position while on the road and safety aids such as the "life saver" glance.  So with my pass certificate in my hand, thoughts turned towards something faster...

The Sprit quickly sold on E-bay and for a decent price, the buyer actually drove up from Stratford-Upon-Avon to collect it !

Within a few days I noticed a garage advert in my local paper for an Adly Supersonic 125cc.  Knowing nothing at all about Adly as a company I checked their websites, www.adly.co.uk  & www.hercheemoto.com ,  read reviews in "What Bike" and the ever  reliable Twist & Go.  They are made by a Taiwanese company called Her-Chee who "What Bike" described as producing some "seriously well specified scoots".

This sounded encouraging so I went to have a look at the bike and within an hour had bought it for the knock down price of £900.  The difference in power was amazing, it also felt considerably more substantial and therefore safer.

In the following few months I quickly ran up almost 8000km on my daily commute.  The bike never let me down once although by November I was beginning to notice it was getting harder to start.  I thought it was probably a sign the battery was packing in so booked it into a local garage for a check over (basic service jobs I'd been doing myself as the bike was bought with no warranty).  Actually the battery was fine, the problem was caused by the closing of valves in the carb and exhaust as the engine had bedded in.  With these properly adjusted it was like having a new bike both in terms of starting and overall speed.

In December I had a slight mishap, decided to set out on a very frosty day when common sense should have said get the bus.  Got to the end of my street, pulled up at the junction and put my foot down on a patch of black ice.  Next thing I knew I was lying under the scooter...painful, but a lesson learned.

With Spring 2004 on the horizon I decided it was time for something new.  The Adly had served me well, but it could be something of a white knuckle ride crossing the Forth Bridge if it was windy, time to look for a bike offering greater stability.  For a while I'd had my eye on the Piaggio B125 which looked amazing.  During a trip to Bristol in January I visited the huge Fowlers motorcycle dealership and saw one in the flesh, that was it, my mind was made up !
